2021Academic Year Short Course Review「The Order of Nature: Geometry and Patterns」

From 11 to 22 January 2021, students from the Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts China Centre completed a two-week course entitled "The Order of Nature: Geometry and Patterns” under the direction of PFSTA tutor Lisa DeLong and Tom Bree.

Course Content: 

DAY1-5

  • the usage of compass and the 3-fold & 6-fold diagram + patterns

  • 7-fold (concept of days of the week & 7 planets) & 4-fold & 8-fold diagram + patterns with slides of real-life case studies

  • how to prepare tea stained watercolour paper

  • tessellation composition & pathways + how to transfer the drawing from tracing paper to tea stained watercolour paper

Day 6-10

  • Star-cut diagram and related patterns

  • 12-fold symmetry diagram + four 12-pointed starts + Flower of life (creation diagram)

  • Progression drawings + Proportions (square, √2 rectangle, √3 rectangle, √4 rectangle, √5 rectangle)
