The module “Design Principles Applied to Ceramic Tiles: The Marriage of Geometry and Biomorph”was delivered by Nooshin Shafiei from the King's Foundation School of Traditional Arts at Yuan Centre on 15 - 26 April.

The main objective of the module was introducing students to experience the expressions on the design motifs and patterns on traditional ceramic craft, influenced by not only the Chinese cultures, but also the geometric order that structures and proportions the application of floral motifs. Students were also encouraged to learn how to transfer, paint, and present design motifs onto ceramic forms such as tiles.

Through practicing, students engaged with practical ceramics processes including the application of glazes and kiln firings. Their painting skills were developed through massive daily practice, knowledge of characters of materials and painting techniques were gradually gained from various of works. Students also explored the advantages and places to be developed on their works through regular reviews, new development could be found in new practice.
