2025 Academic Year Short Course Review 「Principles of The Buddhist Figure」
In the first week, under the guidance of Jamyang Lodro Rin-poche, the 47th Lineage Master of the Jonang sect of Tibetan Buddhism, students studied related Jonang artworks on view at the Jinze Art Centre to gain an understanding of the art and philosophy of Buddhist portraiture. After that, professional Thangka artists taught the students drawing technique, the foundation of Thangka painting.Students spent a long time before they could begin to sketch and draw a continuous line, slowly and steadily.
Through persistent practice over a one-week period, student laid the first foundation for polychrome Thangka painting, which includes line drawing, preparing mineral colours and stretching fabric canvases.
In the second week, students began learning the classical proportion of Shakyamuni Buddha, and touched upon the method for creating black-ground Thangka painting. At the end of the two-week course, each student was finally able to complete one basic Thangka painting.
In these two weeks, all the students gained a first-hand experience of both polychrome and black-ground Thangka painting.
