This course combines theory with practice to cultivate students’ interests and practical skills in textiles and it design and production. Learn about the history and development of textile weaving technology; study different kinds of natural fabrics, basic organizational structures of textiles; practice weaving, dyeing with natural plants and looming; learn and operate on traditional weaving machines and complete one piece of textile with geometric patterns.

 

Module aims:

  • To introduce the general silk culture, different types of silk and their products;
  • To learn basics about fibers and be able to appreciate fabrics made of natural fibers;
  • To learn about mechanism of warp and weft, and the process by which fiber materials are made into yarn;
  • To analyze the organizational structure of fabrics and how they are made on the textile machines;
  • To perform dyeing process with plant dye and how to dye different kinds of yarn;
  • To design and produce textile pieces and perform weaving on traditional textile machines.

Tutor biography

Liu Fangfang

Liu Fangfang,graduated from The Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts in 2018 and won the CICLITIRA PRIZE for her degree show. She studied oil painting in Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2011.

Wang Guohe

Wang Guohe is a professor and doctoral advisor at the School of Textile and Clothing Engineering at Suzhou University. His field of research is textile design and its development process. Professor Wang publishes widely and has authored several textbooks. He is engaged in both the theoretical work of research and teaching and the applied field of product development. His research projects have received a number of awards on the state and national levels. He has won awards for his patents and innovations in the textile industry.
