Foundation Courses On Traditional Arts

Admission Information

The King's Foundation School of Traditional Arts China Centre is now receiving applications to its one-year Traditional Arts Foundation Course starting in October 2024. The programme is open to professionals and art lovers of all ages and backgrounds. Upon successful completion of the programme, students receive a Foundation Certificate in Traditional Arts. This is the only Foundation-level programme in China. Students in this course receive integrated training in the principles of traditional arts, crafts and design skills taught by international masters from both Eastern and Western traditions. All learning is practice-based and offers insights into the contemplative and symbolic aspects of the great world art traditions. The programme will lay the foundation for independent artistic practices and future studies. By the end of the course, graduates will have built an extensive portfolio of work that will enable them to continue their studies and apply to The King's Foundation School of Traditional Arts Master of Arts Degree in London, or any BA level Art Degree in the UK.

1. Eligible Students:

The course welcomes participants from all backgrounds and skill levels who have a keen interest in the study of the traditional arts, and in learning about the traditional principles of harmony in design. The knowledge gained on the course can benefit the development of professional practice as well as the learning of new skills. 

We invite: established and young artists, artisans, designers, architects, art professionals as well as students with backgrounds in fine art, design, fashion, textile, paintings, ceramics and calligraphy over the age of 16. This course can also help students already enrolled on other art disciplines to deepen their own studies and practices.

2. Application Deadline:

Applications for admission must be submitted to the China Centre by 30 September 2024.

3. Interview and Selection Process:

Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by the admissions panel of The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts and the China Centre. Applicants who are qualified for consideration will be notified by email and phone, and an interview will be scheduled. A personal portfolio of works is required for the interview, unless otherwise arranged.

4. Notification of Admission:

Following the interview, successful applicants will receive a formal letter of notification and an agreement to be signed and returned to the China Centre.

5. Tuition Payment:

Tuition fees are due in a single payment within the time specified in the registration form.

8. Accommodation:

The China Centre is not responsible for local accommodation of students,but the Centre's staff will be happy to provide relevant information about Suzhou and assistance to students who may require it.

9. Certificate of Completion:

At the end of the academic year, qualified students will receive a 'Foundation Certificate in Traditional Arts' from The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts, certifying that the training completed meets UK expectations and guidelines for a Foundation-level qualification in the study of traditional arts and crafts.

12. Rules of Admission:

1) Admission is based on evaluation of the materials submitted in the application process.

2) After the commencement of classes, if a student should withdraw either voluntarily or at the behest of The School, tuition will not be refundable. 

3) The China Centre reserves the right to make appropriate adjustments to the teaching content based on requirements.

4) The right of interpretation of this Admissions Guide belongs to The King's Foundation School of Traditional Arts China Centre.

Prospective Students

The 'Foundation Course in Traditional Arts' is suitable for the following applicants:

•Artists, designers, craftsmen/artisans and ordinary art lovers

•Those who wish to apply to the Master of Arts degree programme at the Prince's Foundation School for Traditional Arts in London

•Those who wish to apply for undergraduate or postgraduate courses in overseas art schools or university institutions

•Those who wish to deepen their understanding of the theory and practice of traditional Western arts and crafts

•Chinese traditional artists, artisans and craftsmen interested in the integration of Western traditional art and Chinese traditional art practices.

•Non-professional arts practitioners and arts/crafts enthusiasts who have a strong interest in Western and Chinese traditional arts and would like to improve their knowledge and skill.

•Art and Design professionals who wish to deepen their knowledge and practices. 

 

After one year of intensive full-time study, course participants will gain the following: 

•Build a comprehensive personal portfolio of design principles, fine art and crafts projects, as well as study notes and creative ideas 

•Mastery of methodologies which can express abstract principles through practical and creative artistic skills, laying a solid foundation for further study and artistic creation.

•The rare opportunity to engage with and learn from noted Western and Chinese arts practitioners, specialists and scholars.

•Students who go on to successfully apply and then enroll on the two-year Master's Degree programme at The Prince's Foundation School for Traditional Arts will study in London for the first year, and then will return to China to complete the second year of the MA programme in a Chinese context. Tutoring and assistance will be provided by teachers of the MA programme of The School. Students will continue to fulfill all academic requirements of the MA course. End of year work will be shown in London as part of The School's Master's Degree Graduation Exhibition.
